Mazal Tov, Avi Abeles (Y12), on completion this morning of a second Daf Yomi Masecheta, "Shavuout" with Mercaz Daf Yomi (MDY). Thank you for celebrating this occasion with the school community.
May you go from strength to strength and continue growing in your learning.
Last Thursday night, Yavneh Boys enjoyed an engaging Leil Shishi session that brought Torah learning to life with food, fun, and fascinating discussion.
Rabbi Simmonds began the evening with a gripping account of the Cairo Geniza - a hidden repository of sacred texts stored for generations. His introduction highlighted the care and reverence we show for written Torah materials, setting the perfect tone for the learning that followed. In carousel-style stations, the boys explored real-life questions relating to Sheimos - holy writings and objects that require respectful handling:
The evening ended on a delicious note with the classic Leil Shishi combination of cholent and kugel, leaving both minds and stomachs satisfied. Kol hakavod to all the boys who took part - we look forward to the next Leil Shishi at Yavneh! This week’s Leil Shishi took an entertaining and thought-provoking turn as we tackled the fascinating world of minhagim - and how seriously we take them.
We began by exploring two very different approaches to minhagim: Rambam’s cautious approach, versus the Chasam Sofer, who saw minhag as carrying the full weight of Torah law once accepted by a community. Armed with this background, students worked in groups to sort through dozens of cards containing real (and questionable) Jewish practices. Was this one halacha, a real minhag, or just a meshugaas - something baseless or exaggerated? Lively debate, laughter, and sharp thinking filled the room as students defended their classifications and challenged one another’s assumptions. We concluded the evening with a well-earned supper of hotdogs, rounding off an engaging and thought-provoking session in true Yavneh style. |
