We are excited to share the results of the first Kollel Challenge, held this week at Yavneh. After Shacharis, Rabbi Yisroel Meir Shaftesley spoke to the boys, explaining the correct answers to the challenge questions. His insights were both engaging and educational, helping the boys deepen their understanding. In a raffle held afterwards, Bobby Wagon emerged as the lucky winner, receiving an Amazon voucher. We congratulate him on this achievement! We also want to acknowledge the effort of all the boys who participated. Each one has been given a small reward as a token of appreciation for their dedication and hard work.
We look forward to seeing even more boys take part in the next Kollel Challenge! Yavneh Boys were treated to a rare and special guest—Rabbi Dan Lieberman, the Chief Rabbi of Perth, Australia, who braved the long-haul flight and jetlag just to speak with us! With his trademark wit and warmth, Rabbi Lieberman shared a vital lesson: before we can work on Teshuva, we need to believe in ourselves. Because, let's face it, if you don't believe in yourself, who will? His message was clear -self-confidence isn’t just important, it’s the first step to personal and spiritual growth.
Tonight's Yavneh Leil Shishi event was described by many students as the best one yet! It was the final session in a series of events held throughout the month of Elul, focusing on Sefer Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzos.
We were honoured to host Rabbi Shloimi Schwarz, local Sofer, who led the boys through an unforgettable hands-on experience, demonstrating writing with a quill as a real Sofer. Each student tried writing their own name with a real Sofer's quill. Rabbi Schwarz also shared fascinating Halachos related to writing Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzos, bringing deeper meaning to the session. Across the room, boys were presented with a pile of Passul Mezuzos. Their challenge? To spot the mistakes by comparing them to a Kosher one. The boys eagerly participated, and prizes of personalized keyrings, handwritten by Rabbi Schwarz, added to the excitement. The event also included a hands-on experience with Tefillin in various stages of production. Each boy had the unique opportunity to insert the four parshiyos into the Tefillin Shel Rosh, following the correct order for both Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam interpretations. The wonderful evening concluded with pizza and chips, a perfect end to an enriching and fun-filled night. A big thank you to our anonymous sponsor and all the Rebbes who made this event possible! Today saw the Year 8 and Year 9 boys enjoying a thoroughly competitive time in the gym playing Basketball. This open session is part of their extra-curricular timetable available to the boys each Thursday.
Mendy Leitner (13YB) delivered an inspiring assembly this morning, sharing the meaningful story of his late grandfather. He recounted how his grandfather always carried a notebook to record original Torah insights and questions. Mendy also shared the well-known teaching of R' Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, that one should always carry two notes in their pockets: one reading "בשבילי נברא העולם" (The world was created for me), and the other "ואנכי עפר ואפר" (I am but dust and ashes). To conclude, Mendy distributed notebooks with these powerful sayings printed on them.
