Leil Shishi - Shofar So Good!

A Wonderful Start to Leil Shishi – Shofar Workshop
This week marked the exciting return of our Leil Shishi programme – and what a way to begin! The theme for the evening was the Shofar, and the boys were treated to a hands-on, interactive, and inspiring experience that brought this mitzvah to life.

The evening began with words of introduction from R’ Schwalbe, the Maggid of Yavneh, who set the tone with his trademark inspirational stories. The boys were then divided into groups and rotated through three engaging stations:

  • Station 1 – Exploring Animal Horns: The boys learned that not all horns are kosher for making a shofar. Using pictures and descriptions, they matched different animals to their horns, discovering the fascinating halachos and reasons behind the shofar’s unique requirements.
  • Station 2 – How a Shofar is Made: A video demonstration, together with a real unfinished horn passed around the group, gave the boys insight into the process of transforming a raw horn into a beautiful shofar. They discussed each stage of production and gained a new appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.
  • Station 3 – Hands-On Shofar Blowing: The highlight for many! Each boy had the opportunity to practise blowing a shofar, guided by their Rebbeim. Alongside the practical skills, they learned the key halachos of shofar blowing – from holding it in the right hand to producing a continuous, unbroken sound. With determination (and a few deep breaths!), many boys managed a proud tekiah.
After the rotations, everyone reconvened for a lively quiz, using an interactive online game that tested their knowledge from the evening. Finally, the boys enjoyed a well-deserved supper of delicious chulent, rounding off the evening with full stomachs and high spirits.
